Child and Adolescent Development Services

Introduction

Every child learns, communicates and understands the world in their own unique way. Understanding their developmental needs begins with recognising their strengths and characteristics in areas such as thinking, communication, emotions and social relationships. A comprehensive assessment not only helps address learning needs, but also enables parents to better understand their child's strengths and challenges, so that appropriate support can be provided.

CUHK Medical Centre offers Child and Adolescent Development Services. Using evidence-based assessment tools alongside detailed clinical interviews, we gain a comprehensive understanding of each child's developmental history, family and school life, emotional wellbeing, and interpersonal characteristics. Based on the assessment findings, we provide personalised clinical and educational recommendations tailored to each child's needs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Each assessment usually takes approximately two to three hours and is conducted on a one-to-one basis by a member of our professional team. While the child is undergoing the assessment, parents may rest in the reception area.

Please bring the following:

  • Schoolwork: Samples of your child's work from different school subjects.
  • School Reports: School report cards from the current academic year and the previous two academic years.
  • Previous Assessment Reports: Copies of any speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychological assessment or paediatric assessment reports, if available.
  • Glasses or Hearing Aids: If your child normally wears prescribed glasses or hearing aids, please ensure they are worn during the assessment.
  • Adequate Sleep: Ensure your child gets sufficient sleep the night before the assessment so that they can perform at their best.
  • Adequate Nutrition: Ensure your child has eaten before arriving. Excessive sugar intake and caffeinated drinks should be avoided on the day of the assessment.
  • Medication Guidance: If your child takes prescribed medication regularly, they should continue taking it as usual unless otherwise advised by their doctor.
  • Psychological Preparation: Explain to your child that the assessment is designed to understand how they learn and think, and that it is not an examination.

The assessment report is usually completed within two weeks after the assessment.

All assessment reports are prepared by our qualified medical and professional team and carry clinical and academic credibility. They may be used as supporting documentation when applying to schools or relevant organisations for Special Educational Needs (SEN) support, special examination arrangements, and other related educational support services.

However, according to the relevant guidelines issued by the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority regarding SEN support, certain support applications may require additional certification issued by a Specialist in Psychiatry.
