Scheme Details

The Total Knee Replacement Package Scheme for Public Hospital Patients (the “Scheme”) aims to provide patients on the public hospital waiting list for total knee replacement surgery with an additional healthcare service pathway, with a view to shorten the treatment waiting time and enhancing the flexibility and accessibility of care.

Eligibility
 
  • Hong Kong permanent resident
  • Enrollment in the Electronic Health System (eHealth) is mandatory at the time of submitting application
  • Patient on the total knee replacement surgery waiting list of a public hospital
  • Passed CUHK Medical Centre’s Suitability Assessment 

 

Total Knee Replacement Package Scheme for Public Hospital Patients
HKD 128,000 (single knee)
The Scheme Covers:
 
  • Hospital stay in standard room (4-bed)
  • Pre- and post-operative standard nursing care during hospitalisation
  • Operating Theatre charges
  • Unilateral Total Knee Replacement Surgery
  • Designated implant 
  • Procedure-related standard items and drugs
    • Standard consumables, instruments, equipment, and X-ray examination(s) for the specified operation
    • Physiotherapy treatment during hospitalisation
    • Inpatient and discharge (up to 7 days) medications that are related to the specified operation
  • Surgeon, anaesthesiologist, and ward round fees
Items Not Covered under the Scheme:
 
  • Pre-operative doctor consultations and assessment fees
  • Charges for additional operations, medications, investigations, treatments, specialist consultations, and sundries not related to the specified operation
  • Charges for treatments, medications, and hospitalisation arising from pre-existing medical conditions, including chronic illnesses, and their complications after the specified operation
  • Additional advanced diagnostic imaging examinations such as CT, MRI, and bone scan other than procedure-related standard items
  • Meals, companion bed, rehabilitation aids, and other miscellaneous costs during hospitalisation
  • Follow-up doctor consultations and physiotherapy treatment fees after discharge

Terms & Conditions

Eligibility:

  1. Permanent resident of Hong Kong 
  2. Enrollment in the Electronic Health System (eHealth) is mandatory at the time of submitting application
  3. Patient must be on the total knee replacement surgery waiting list of a public hospital
  4. Passed CUHK Medical Centre’s suitability assessment


Participation Method and Suitability Assessment:

  1. A valid total knee replacement surgery appointment slip from a public hospital, or a letter from a public hospital doctor certifying that the patient is on the waiting list of such surgery, must be presented for booking.
  2. Patient is required to undergo the following for determining his suitability for the Scheme:
    • Specialist consultation(s) by designated specialist(s) at CUHK Medical Centre first; if deemed appropriate by the specialist(s), the patient must also undergo pre-operative assessment, which includes electrocardiogram (ECG), laboratory tests, and/or diagnostic X-ray imaging.
    • Designated surgeon will determine the patient's suitability for the specified operation under the Scheme and for the Scheme based on the specialist consultation(s) and pre-operative assessment results; CUHK Medical Centre reserves the right of final decision on a patient’s suitability for the Scheme.
  3. Upon admission, 50% of the package fee under the Scheme must be paid as a deposit prior to hospital admission.
  4. If the patient develops any unrelated medical issues after admission that require new treatment, additional costs will be incurred for that new treatment; CUHK Medical Centre will obtain patient's prior consent regarding the new treatment and related charges before proceeding with such treatment.
  5. Items and services under the Scheme are fixed. No refund, exchange for other item or service, or fee reduction will be provided if any item or service under the Scheme has not been performed or supplied (or has only been partially performed or supplied) for any reason.
  6. If extension of hospital stay is not covered under the Scheme, the additional hospital stay and related costs will be calculated and charged separately according to their prevailing fees.

 

Scheme Not Applicable to:

  1. The Scheme does not apply to patients with the following conditions:
    • Patients with significant chronic illnesses or co-morbidity diseases (e.g. heart disease, renal disease)
    • Patients with severe osteoporosis, significant deformities, or who require complex corrective surgery
    • Patients with high BMI or other factors increasing anaesthetic/surgery risks
    • Patients who need to conduct more than one operation/procedure at one time
  2. The Scheme does not cover operation performed during non-office hours.

 

Other Terms and Conditions:

  1.  Direct billing arrangement with, or insurance/reimbursement claim from, any insurance companies/corporate entities is not applicable.
  2. Other offers or discounts cannot be used in conjunction with the Scheme.
  3. Please refer to (i) the Remarks to “CUMC Medical Package” (CMP) as published on the relevant webpage of the website of CUHK Medical Centre (https://www.cuhkmc.hk/fees-and-charges/medical-packages/cumc-medical-package/orthopaedics) for the terms and conditions of CMP and (ii) the individual budget estimate form for the terms and conditions that are specific to the package fee for the specified operation under the Scheme.
  4. CUHK Medical Centre reserves the right of final decision on patients’ suitability for the Scheme. 
  5. CUHK Medical Centre Limited (“CUHKMC”) reserves the right to amend any of the terms and conditions relating to the Scheme without prior notice. In case of any dispute, CUHKMC shall have the final decision.
  6. The above price is for reference only. All the latest prices shall be subject to the latest announcements of CUHK Medical Centre.
