CUHK Medical Centre Receives Donation of Precious Paintings from Renowned Hong Kong Lingnan Artist Professor Ng Yuet-lau Creating a Graceful and Peaceful Healing Environment to Enbrace Humanistic Healthcare
CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) hosted a donation ceremony to express its gratitude to Professor Ng Yuet-lau, a renowned Hong Kong artist and President of the Ling Ngai Art Association, for her generous donation of her two precious ink paintings Bauhinia in the Gentle Breeze and The Quiet Spring. This donation not only enriches the cultural ambience of CUHKMC, but also supports it in creating a graceful and peaceful healing environment, thereby actualising its mission of promoting humanistic care.
Professor Ng Yuet-lau, a student of Chinese painting masters Professor Chao Shao-an and Professor Huang Jun-bi, is widely acclaimed as one of the third-generation masters of the Lingnan School of Painting. She places much focus on sketching in Nature, from which she has been inspired of colouring and use of ink. The prominent characteristic of her landscapes is the blending of splash ink patches with textural details in the representation of mountains. Her brushstrokes are both vigorous and graceful, creating transparent and vivid imagery. Over the years, she has held solo exhibitions around the world and her works have been collected by various museums. She was also listed among “The World’s One Hundred Outstanding Chinese” and was honoured with the title of “The World’s Outstanding Chinese” in recognition of her remarkable achievements.
Professor Ng’s long-standing connection with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) dates back many years. She has co-hosted an art exhibition on the CUHK campus with her son, Professor Philip Chiu Wai-yan, Dean of CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine, to guide students in learning Chinese painting, earning deep respect from faculty and students alike. Professor Chiu, influenced by his mother since childhood, continues to explore the value and meaning of life through medicine and art.
Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CUHKMC, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Professor Ng for her generous donation of two precious paintings. He said, “The Lingnan School of Painting has always been known for its pursuit of exploration and innovation. Its spirit of ‘Balance Chinese and foreign. Blend tradition and modernity’ echoes CUHK’s mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. Professor Ng's generosity truly carries this dedication to education and cultural heritage into the healthcare setting, ensuring that art is no longer confined to exhibition halls but is instead brought into the community, where it can resonate with people on a deeply human level.”
Professor Ng Yuet-lau, President of the Ling Ngai Art Association, said, “The inspiration for Bauhinia in the Gentle Breeze comes from the beautiful scenery seen from CUHK. The sun at the top of the painting symbolises the rising sun, bringing warmth and hope to patients. The blooming bauhinia in the painting not only represent Hong Kong’s unique identity, but also embody vitality. The Quiet Spring depicts fresh spring water flowing across the land, symbolising purity and vitality and bringing a sense of comfort and healing. The ever-flowing spring signifies cleansing and rebirth, expressing wishes for the restoration of physical, mental and spiritual well-being.”
CUHKMC has always been committed to being a pioneer in local healthcare innovation, while placing great emphasis on patient experience and championing a culture of “service with warmth”. The two donated paintings perfectly exemplify the integration of medicine and art. Bauhinia in the Gentle Breeze is displayed near the entrance of the Lower Ground Floor (LG/F) at CUHKMC, greeting visitors with an atmosphere of art and warmth upon entering the hospital. The other painting, The Quiet Spring, is exhibited at CUHKMC’s Education and Training Centre, providing a serene artistic space for reflection and rejuvenation for healthcare professionals and trainees.
