The International Scoliosis Awareness Month takes place in June every year. To enhance public understanding of scoliosis, CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC), in collaboration with the Hong Kong Musculoskeletal Health Foundation and the Hong Kong Scoliosis Awareness Group, held a talk on scoliosis on 28 June (Saturday), attracting over 180 members of the public.
We were honoured to have professors from CUHK Medicine, orthopaedic specialists, psychiatrist, physiotherapist, and orthotist as guest speakers. They provided in-depth discussions on the causes of scoliosis, the timing for screening, and the latest treatment methods, including the Schroth method, brace design and effectiveness, surgical options and advancements, as well as the importance of mental health and family support. Moreover, representatives from the Hong Kong Scoliosis Society also shared with audience their personal experiences and challenges.
On the day, an exhibition area was set up, showcasing computerised navigation systems, intraoperative neurological monitoring systems, the Schroth method, various orthotic braces, and preliminary examination methods. This allowed participants to learn more about the latest technologies and interact with the professional team.
