CUHKMC Stages Phase II Price Adjustment Covering Orthopaedics &Traumatology, Breast Surgery, Gynaecology, Chemotherapy and Chronic Medications

CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) has staged Phase II of its price adjustment initiative on 22 December, extending coverage to Orthopaedics &Traumatology, Breast Surgery, Gynaecology, chemotherapy and chronic medications. Building upon Phase I which commenced on 1 November, this initiative reinforces CUHKMC’s dedication to delivering transparent, affordable and trustworthy medical care. Dr. CHUNG Kin Lai, Chief Executive Officer of CUHKMC, said, “We are pleased to receive positive feedback from the community regarding our Phase I price adjustments. Phase II now extends its coverage, including Orthopaedics &Traumatology, Breast Surgery, Gynaecology, chemotherapy and chronic medications. In this comprehensive review of approximately 320 items, we have implemented price reductions for 76%, maintained current pricing for 21%, with only one item requiring an increase in price.” Many chronic disease patients require long-term medication, including those with hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia (known as “three-highs”), dementia, and urological conditions. Additionally, chemotherapy treatments typically extend over longer periods, inevitably creating a financial burden through sustained medication costs. To alleviate these medical expenses, in this phase, CUHKMC has reviewed and implemented price reductions for all 100 types of chronic medications and over 120 chemotherapy items, with some prices reducing by up to 30%, demonstrating our commitment to supporting patients throughout their healthcare journey. Taking a patient with “three highs” as an example, their monthly medication expenses have been reduced by approximately 35%, from over $1,800 to about $1,200. In addition to medication costs, fees for the majority of surgical procedures have also been reduced. For example, the fee for bilateral total knee replacement surgery has been reduced by 5.4% from $275,510 to $260,500, i.e. a saving of $15,010. This adjustment initiative encompasses not only price reductions, but also package restructuring across different services. For example, in orthopaedic joint replacement surgery, fees are set according to different brands of artificial joints, with clearer definition of the scope of items covered in the pricing, allowing patients greater flexibility in their choices. For breast surgery, the current package structure has been simplified and some procedures have been unbundled from the existing package to improve charge transparency. Certain gynaecology service fees have been consolidated and repriced to better reflect procedural complexity. In addition, prices for all chemotherapy packages have been reduced in this adjustment exercise.  In Phase I price adjustment implemented last month, over 1,300 items were reviewed, among which over 1,000 items had their fees lowered. In line with Phase I’s principles - prioritising clinical value, implementing evidence-based clinical protocols, and maintaining simple yet flexible pricing structures - CUHKMC provides the public with a wider range of healthcare options at more competitive prices in this phase of price adjustment. On the whole, the price adjustments are based on five key strategies: bottom-up costing, capacity cost rates, complication risk assessment, benchmarking against the market, and factoring in feedback from stakeholders. Through this comprehensive evaluation mechanism, CUHKMC ensures pricing reflects both healthcare value and patient affordability. CUHKMC implementing price adjustments not only provides practical benefits to the public, but also demonstrates CUHKMC’s determination in fulfilling its social responsibilities and serving as a crucial bridge between public and private healthcare systems. CUHKMC will continue to proactively review prices for the public along a practical approach, to ensure service charges are reasonable and value-for-money.

CUHK Medical Centre Receives Donation of Ancient Tree Pu’er Tea for Charity Sale to Support Elderly Dementia Screening; Nearly 30% Diagnosed with Early Alzheimer’s Disease

With a generous donation of premium ancient tree Pu’er tea for charity sale, over HK$340,000 was raised to support CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) in conducting further assessments for elderly individuals suspected of having early dementia. The event, titled “普利眾生” in Chinese, has subsidised 55 elderly people with memory problems to receive the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and blood tests as of August 2025. Among them, 21 participants underwent further evaluation using AccuBrain®, an artificial intelligence (AI) assisted brain imaging assessment tool validated by CUHK. Following the assessment, 16 out of the 55 participants were diagnosed with prodromal or early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, accounting for nearly 30% of the group. Four organisations, namely Po Leung Kuk, Haven of Hope Christian Service, the Hong Kong Buddhist Association and Kwan Sang Charity Foundation Limited, participated in this project. They referred elderly singletons and persons in families of elderly doubletons aged above 60, suspected of early-stage dementia, to CUHKMC for MoCA and blood tests. The blood tests, which are not yet included in routine blood screening at public hospitals, directly measure abnormal proteins in blood, including p-Tau and neurofilament light chain, to aid the diagnosis of dementia. Based on the assessment results, specialists in neurology will arrange the AccuBrain® assessment for those patients who require further evaluation, where the brain MRI scans are analysed with AI technology for detection of dementia. Dr. CHUNG Kin Lai, Chief Executive Officer of CUHKMC, said, “We express our heartfelt gratitude to the generosity of the supporters. Currently, one in every ten elderly people in Hong Kong suffers from dementia, while over 60-80% of dementia patients are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. CUHKMC and CUHK Faculty of Medicine will continue to work together to advance dementia screening initiatives. We hope to raise public awareness of this disease, enabling early identification and treatment for more patients.” Dr. Alexander LAU Yuk Lun, Specialist in Neurology of CUHKMC, added, “In Hong Kong, among the elderly persons aged 80 or above, one in every five is diagnosed with dementia. The situation is alarming. However, recent research reveals that if we can prevent proactively before symptoms appear, and strengthen our brain health and adjust our lifestyle habits, the incidence rate can be reduced by 40%. Therefore, early prevention, detection and treatment are critical.”

CUHK Medical Centre Launches “Breast Cancer Surgery Subsidy Scheme” Enables Patients Awaiting Designated Breast Cancer Surgeries at Public Hospitals to Receive Timely Treatment

With the generous support of the Lee Yin Yee’s family, CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) launches the “Breast Cancer Surgery Subsidy Scheme” (the Subsidy Scheme) starting from today, enabling 100 patients who are on waiting lists for designated breast cancer surgeries at public hospitals to receive timely treatment. Eligible patients will receive full financial support covering the fees of designated surgery and inpatient hospitalisation, as well as scheduled post-operative surgical outpatient consultations within two months after discharge.  The Subsidy Scheme will be open for application in phases until the quota is full. Applicants must be permanent residents of Hong Kong and have enrolled in the Electronic Health Record Sharing System (eHealth), and who are on waiting lists of one of the following breast cancer surgeries at public hospitals (excluding Breast-Conserving Therapy): Total Mastectomy Total Mastectomy and Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy and Frozen Section and (if applicable) Axillary Dissection Total Mastectomy and Axillary Dissection Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy and Frozen Section and (if applicable) Axillary Dissection Axillary Dissection Patients who intend to apply for participation are required to register in advance. CUHK Medical Centre Announces Appointment of CEO

CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) announces the appointment of Dr CHUNG Kin Lai as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CUHKMC, with effect from 1 August 2025, succeeding Dr FUNG Hong, who will be retiring and stepping down on 31 July. Dr Chung will assume the role of CEO-designate starting from 16 June to facilitate the handover with Dr Fung. Dr Chung is a specialist in Emergency Medicine by background, and is an experienced senior executive with extensive experience in hospital management. Prior to his current position, he was the Cluster Chief Executive of New Territories East and Hospital Chief Executive (HCE) of Prince of Wales Hospital under the Hospital Authority (HA) since December 2022, overseeing 7 hospitals and medical institutions providing public health services to residents of Shatin, Tai Po and North District. Dr Chung has also served as the HA Director (Quality & Safety), leading various support services for the Government in areas including infection control, disaster emergency response, etc., as well as administering public hospitals’ quality & standards, patient safety, clinical incident management, etc. Dr Chung possesses substantial experience in hospital operation and medical services management, and has shouldered many other important roles including Consultant (Emergency Medicine) of Tuen Mun Hospital, HCE of Castle Peak Hospital and Siu Lam Hospital, and HCE of North District Hospital.  The Board of CUHKMC welcomes Dr Chung as the new CEO of CUHKMC and wishes him every success in his new role. The Board also extends gratitude to Dr Fung for his contributions to the establishment and development of CUHKMC over the past 10 years.

CUHK Medical Centre Hosts “Innovation Symposium - Pioneering Solutions in Healthcare 2024” To Promote Empathy and Patient Experience

CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) held the “Innovation Symposium - Pioneering Solutions in Healthcare 2024” on 23 November 2024, featuring a series of inspirational panel sessions and talks by distinguished speakers and professionals in healthcare and innovation technology. As the third event after its debut in 2021, this year’s event aims to promote empathy and patient experience, and attracted more than 340 industry leaders and members of the public attending in person and online. In his opening remarks, Dr. Chien LEE, Chairman of the Board of CUHKMC, said, “‘Empathy’ and ‘Innovation’, two seemingly unrelated concepts, are actually intertwined in healthcare. These two elements when properly balanced, lay the foundation for exceptional patient care, ultimately improving patient outcome and experience. When innovators of healthcare grasp the importance of empathy, they will be able to use the rigours of creative thinking to find answers to patients’ challenges.” On 23 November, the symposium consisted of two sessions. In the morning session themed “Empathy and Innovation: The Future of Healthcare”, it featured three panel sessions delivered by eminent medical professionals and innovation technology experts, targeting at professionals in healthcare industry. Mr. Amir Dan RUBIN, CEO of Healthier Capital, shared his insights for leading in patient experience with audience.  Dr. Alexander NG, President of Tencent Healthcare, gave a keynote address on how to encounter the healthcare challenges of the Mainland with a population of 1.4 billion. Ms. LEE Chen Ee, Group Director for Innovation and Transformation of SingHealth, was present to deliver an address on patient-centered innovation. In the afternoon session themed “Care from Heart: Heartwarming Moments between Doctors and Patients”, professors from The Chinese University of Hong Kong as well as CUHKMC specialists and medical professionals hosted 7 health talks covering a vast range of topics, including dementia, cancer treatment, heart disease, etc. Family members of patients were also present to share about their caregiver’s journey. Dr. Hong FUNG, Chief Executive Officer of CUHKMC, said, “Empathy is the key to providing healthcare services. Cultivating empathy is crucial to understanding the needs and feelings of patients and their caregivers. The exchange of knowledge and experience could promote the rationale of empathy and patient experience. That is why we have organised this Symposium, bringing together the industry leaders, innovators and technology experts, to discuss and explore how we could enhance the experience of patients and caregivers in healthcare services.”  On the following day of the Symposium (24 November), an Open House was organised to showcase some of the major services and technologies of CUHKMC to members of the public, including Radiotherapy Centre, Imaging & Interventional Radiology Centre, Cardiology Centre, Endoscopy Centre, Urology Centre, Eye Centre and Wellness Centre. The Open House was attended by around 300 people on the day.

Migraine is a common type of moderate to severe headache, with more severe pains having an adverse impact on people’s daily lives1. Research2 has shown that around 12.5% of Hong Kong’s population suffers from migraine, especially among people aged 18 to 443. Furthermore, women are three to four times more likely to suffer from migraine than men4. In response, CUHK Medical Centre (“CUHKMC”), FWD Hong Kong (“FWD”), and Pfizer Hong Kong collaborate to raise awareness and help the public to cope with migraine.
