CUHK Medical Centre Introduces Hong Kong-Developed Robotic Surgical System Marking a New Milestone in Smart Healthcare

With the generous support from Dr. Liu Yung Chau & Madam Chen Yuan Rita Charity Foundation, CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) has introduced the locally developed Sentire® Surgical System, and launched the Robotic Surgery Subsidy Scheme, subsidising 200 patients receiving surgeries using the surgical system. In recognition of Dr. Liu Yung Chau and Madam Chen Yuan Rita’s donation, CUHKMC has named a surgery theater “Liu Yung Chau & Chen Yuan Rita Robotic Surgery Centre,” marking a significant milestone in CUHKMC’s development of smart healthcare and minimally invasive surgery.  CUHKMC supports local innovation and technology by taking the lead in introducing the locally developed Sentire® Surgical System. Since its introduction to CUHKMC, over 160 surgeries have been performed, with about 90 of them subsidised. The surgical robot is currently one of the most complex robotic-assisted surgical platforms independently developed in Hong Kong. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s Faculty of Medicine (CU Medicine) received the HKSAR Government’s InnoHK funding support and established the Multi-scale Medical Robotics Center in 2020. Since August 2022, CU Medicine has been collaborating with Cornerstone Robotics to conduct clinical trials on the Sentire® Surgical System, covering colorectal surgeries, urological surgeries, and upper gastrointestinal surgeries.  Professor Dennis Lo Yuk Ming, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CUHKMC, expressed his gratitude to Dr. Liu Yung Chau and Madam Chen Yuan Rita for their support, said, “The locally developed Sentire® Surgical System exemplifies the integration of medical and engineering expertise into advanced clinical application, fully demonstrating the advantages of combining medicine and engineering. Looking ahead, we will continue to utilise this technology to deliver more surgeries that are precise, safe, and affordable for patients.”  A 70-year-old patient, Mr. Cheung, underwent robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer earlier this year. The surgery was successful, the procedure went smoothly, and his recovery was satisfactory. He said, “With the generous support of the donor, I received a subsidy for part of the surgical cost, which allowed me to receive the treatment earlier. The new surgical technology, together with the professional care of the medical team, has been very helpful to my recovery.”  Sentire® Surgical System is currently applied in urology and general surgery and will be extended to multiple specialties in the future, including gynecology, thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery, and cardiology. Compared to traditional surgery, robotic surgery offers smaller incisions for faster recovery, reduces blood loss, and lowers complication risks. Meanwhile, minimally invasive endoscopic surgical instruments allow surgeons to operate with enhanced flexibility as well as a clear and sharp visibility which ensures safe and precise surgery.  The CUHK research team is currently investigating embodied AI using this robotic system. In the future, embodied AI will be able to serve as co-pilot with surgeons in making the most appropriate clinical decisions for safe performance of complex robotic surgeries.

CUHKMC Stages Phase III Price Adjustment – Streamlining Charging for 24-hour Outpatient and Emergency Services and Launching Outpatient Medication Packages

CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) staged in February 2026 Phase III of its price adjustment initiative, following the former two phases respectively implemented in November and December last year. This phase includes adjusting the charging schemes of 24-hour outpatient and emergency services and outpatient medication: consultation fee is only charged according to the registration time while drug packages are introduced for two common illnesses - upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) and gastroenteritis, with an aim to help patients have a better medical expense budget estimation. The new charging scheme has been soft-launched since 1 February 2026. In the past, consultation fees of our 24-hour outpatient and emergency services varied, based on a bundle of factors, including registration time, whether an appointment was made with a specific doctor, and patient’s conditions (stable or serious). Under the new mechanism, consultation fees are determined only by the registration time. To help patients better manage their medical expense budget, after making reference to the past cases of 24-hour outpatient and emergency services and the costs of commonly used medications, CUHKMC has introduced outpatient drug packages for two common illnesses, namely URTI and gastroenteritis, with a three-day package at HK$180 and a five-day package at HK$220. Patients diagnosed with either URTI or gastroenteritis can receive suitable prescriptions from a list of 83 commonly used medications within the relevant drug package. Meanwhile, prices of more than 10 common antibiotics, which are not among the list of drugs covered by the drug packages, have also been adjusted to benefit patients who require antibiotics as part of their treatment. Prices of some charged items in the 24-hour outpatient and emergency services have also been adjusted, including lifting the surcharge on receiving X-ray screening during non-office hours. Ms. Mandy MA, Chief Financial Officer of CUHKMC, said, “Over one-third of the patients using our 24-hour outpatient and emergency services seek treatment for URTI or gastroenteritis. After implementing the time-based charging scheme and drug packages for our 24-hour outpatient and emergency services, patients with mild illnesses such as cold, influenza, or gastroenteritis can clearly and more easily understand their consultation and medication expenses. In addition, the night outpatient consultation fees after 10pm have also been adjusted, so as to help patients lower their expenses for seeking medical assistance late in the night and enable them to receive timely treatment.”

CUHK Medical Centre Marks Fifth Anniversary Launches “History Gallery” Highlighting CUHK’s Medical Education Legacy and Innovation

CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) officially opened in September 2021. To mark its fifth anniversary this year, CUHKMC has established a “History Gallery” on the Lower Ground Floor (LG/F) to showcase the major milestones of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine (CU Medicine), and CUHKMC, as well as the synergistic efforts demonstrated among the University, the Faculty of Medicine and the teaching hospital in medical education, training and clinical practice.  The CUHKMC History Gallery traces CUHK’s transformation over more than six decades—from barren hill into today’s university town. It also features precious historical photos from the early years of CU Medicine, including the foundation laying of Choh-Ming Li Basic Medical Sciences Building and medical students attending classes in temporary container classrooms, as well as CU Medicine’s excellent research and clinical strengths. CUHKMC held its Ground Breaking Ceremony in December 2016. The History Gallery presents CUHKMC’s transformation from a car park into a fully-fledged hospital. Many disciplines of CU Medicine are ranked among the top globally. The History Gallery highlights multiple areas of the Faculty’s research excellence already implemented at CUHKMC, including advanced endoscopic therapies, paediatrics allergy, breakthroughs in ophthalmology and visual sciences and lung cancer therapy, as well as innovative technology in medicine and rehabilitation for sports medicine. CUHKMC Stages Phase II Price Adjustment Covering Orthopaedics &Traumatology, Breast Surgery, Gynaecology, Chemotherapy and Chronic Medications

CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) has staged Phase II of its price adjustment initiative on 22 December, extending coverage to Orthopaedics &Traumatology, Breast Surgery, Gynaecology, chemotherapy and chronic medications. Building upon Phase I which commenced on 1 November, this initiative reinforces CUHKMC’s dedication to delivering transparent, affordable and trustworthy medical care. Dr. CHUNG Kin Lai, Chief Executive Officer of CUHKMC, said, “We are pleased to receive positive feedback from the community regarding our Phase I price adjustments. Phase II now extends its coverage, including Orthopaedics &Traumatology, Breast Surgery, Gynaecology, chemotherapy and chronic medications. In this comprehensive review of approximately 320 items, we have implemented price reductions for 76%, maintained current pricing for 21%, with only one item requiring an increase in price.” Many chronic disease patients require long-term medication, including those with hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia (known as “three-highs”), dementia, and urological conditions. Additionally, chemotherapy treatments typically extend over longer periods, inevitably creating a financial burden through sustained medication costs. To alleviate these medical expenses, in this phase, CUHKMC has reviewed and implemented price reductions for all 100 types of chronic medications and over 120 chemotherapy items, with some prices reducing by up to 30%, demonstrating our commitment to supporting patients throughout their healthcare journey. Taking a patient with “three highs” as an example, their monthly medication expenses have been reduced by approximately 35%, from over $1,800 to about $1,200. In addition to medication costs, fees for the majority of surgical procedures have also been reduced. For example, the fee for bilateral total knee replacement surgery has been reduced by 5.4% from $275,510 to $260,500, i.e. a saving of $15,010. This adjustment initiative encompasses not only price reductions, but also package restructuring across different services. For example, in orthopaedic joint replacement surgery, fees are set according to different brands of artificial joints, with clearer definition of the scope of items covered in the pricing, allowing patients greater flexibility in their choices. For breast surgery, the current package structure has been simplified and some procedures have been unbundled from the existing package to improve charge transparency. Certain gynaecology service fees have been consolidated and repriced to better reflect procedural complexity. In addition, prices for all chemotherapy packages have been reduced in this adjustment exercise.  In Phase I price adjustment implemented last month, over 1,300 items were reviewed, among which over 1,000 items had their fees lowered. In line with Phase I’s principles - prioritising clinical value, implementing evidence-based clinical protocols, and maintaining simple yet flexible pricing structures - CUHKMC provides the public with a wider range of healthcare options at more competitive prices in this phase of price adjustment. On the whole, the price adjustments are based on five key strategies: bottom-up costing, capacity cost rates, complication risk assessment, benchmarking against the market, and factoring in feedback from stakeholders. Through this comprehensive evaluation mechanism, CUHKMC ensures pricing reflects both healthcare value and patient affordability. CUHKMC implementing price adjustments not only provides practical benefits to the public, but also demonstrates CUHKMC’s determination in fulfilling its social responsibilities and serving as a crucial bridge between public and private healthcare systems. CUHKMC will continue to proactively review prices for the public along a practical approach, to ensure service charges are reasonable and value-for-money.

CUHK Medical Centre Receives Donation of Ancient Tree Pu’er Tea for Charity Sale to Support Elderly Dementia Screening; Nearly 30% Diagnosed with Early Alzheimer’s Disease

With a generous donation of premium ancient tree Pu’er tea for charity sale, over HK$340,000 was raised to support CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) in conducting further assessments for elderly individuals suspected of having early dementia. The event, titled “普利眾生” in Chinese, has subsidised 55 elderly people with memory problems to receive the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and blood tests as of August 2025. Among them, 21 participants underwent further evaluation using AccuBrain®, an artificial intelligence (AI) assisted brain imaging assessment tool validated by CUHK. Following the assessment, 16 out of the 55 participants were diagnosed with prodromal or early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, accounting for nearly 30% of the group. Four organisations, namely Po Leung Kuk, Haven of Hope Christian Service, the Hong Kong Buddhist Association and Kwan Sang Charity Foundation Limited, participated in this project. They referred elderly singletons and persons in families of elderly doubletons aged above 60, suspected of early-stage dementia, to CUHKMC for MoCA and blood tests. The blood tests, which are not yet included in routine blood screening at public hospitals, directly measure abnormal proteins in blood, including p-Tau and neurofilament light chain, to aid the diagnosis of dementia. Based on the assessment results, specialists in neurology will arrange the AccuBrain® assessment for those patients who require further evaluation, where the brain MRI scans are analysed with AI technology for detection of dementia. Dr. CHUNG Kin Lai, Chief Executive Officer of CUHKMC, said, “We express our heartfelt gratitude to the generosity of the supporters. Currently, one in every ten elderly people in Hong Kong suffers from dementia, while over 60-80% of dementia patients are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. CUHKMC and CUHK Faculty of Medicine will continue to work together to advance dementia screening initiatives. We hope to raise public awareness of this disease, enabling early identification and treatment for more patients.” Dr. Alexander LAU Yuk Lun, Specialist in Neurology of CUHKMC, added, “In Hong Kong, among the elderly persons aged 80 or above, one in every five is diagnosed with dementia. The situation is alarming. However, recent research reveals that if we can prevent proactively before symptoms appear, and strengthen our brain health and adjust our lifestyle habits, the incidence rate can be reduced by 40%. Therefore, early prevention, detection and treatment are critical.”

CUHK Medical Centre Launches “Breast Cancer Surgery Subsidy Scheme” Enables Patients Awaiting Designated Breast Cancer Surgeries at Public Hospitals to Receive Timely Treatment

With the generous support of the Lee Yin Yee’s family, CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC) launches the “Breast Cancer Surgery Subsidy Scheme” (the Subsidy Scheme) starting from today, enabling 100 patients who are on waiting lists for designated breast cancer surgeries at public hospitals to receive timely treatment. Eligible patients will receive full financial support covering the fees of designated surgery and inpatient hospitalisation, as well as scheduled post-operative surgical outpatient consultations within two months after discharge.  The Subsidy Scheme will be open for application in phases until the quota is full. Applicants must be permanent residents of Hong Kong and have enrolled in the Electronic Health Record Sharing System (eHealth), and who are on waiting lists of one of the following breast cancer surgeries at public hospitals (excluding Breast-Conserving Therapy): Total Mastectomy Total Mastectomy and Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy and Frozen Section and (if applicable) Axillary Dissection Total Mastectomy and Axillary Dissection Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy and Frozen Section and (if applicable) Axillary Dissection Axillary Dissection Patients who intend to apply for participation are required to register in advance. Limited (SmartCare), a Healthtech innovator nurtured by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to announce a significant partnership aimed at advancing healthcare delivery through innovative artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony marks a strategic commitment to co-develop AI technology solutions for healthcare settings.
